Timisoara
I came to Romania straight out of university as an intern working with intercultural education. After extending my contract twice, I realised how much I love my newly adopted country and decided to stay as long as I could.
"As long as I could" turned into 361 days. I am now back in Canada, but am hoping to revive this blog to coincide with my new job.
The Pelisor has to be one of the homeliest castles I have ever visited. Packed full of personal touches by Queen Mary.
We had an essentially private tour as we turned up just as it was closing and the guide was kind enough to still show us round (I think he wanted to practice his English).
Never made it to the Peles but I'm told it is off the other end of the scale for garishness.
You're right, Peles was awfully garish. I liked it though, because it seemed such a stereotypical "castle" inside. Gold, ivory, eight different types of wood for cabinets. Different rooms decorated after different countries... Maybe it just seemed better to me because I was so disappointed with Rasnov and Bran.
I was quite disappointed with Bran. I expected this looming, gloomy building. In reality, it looked like a modern Mediterranean villa. They wouldn't even show us the tower where they held Erzbet Bathory! I wanted to see 500 year old drops of fresh virgin blood! Lots of tourists and a very annoying tour group helped dampen the epxerience even more.

i last saw the Bran Castle when i was 6 years of age. i wasn't disappointed. but...i choose to hold to that memory, in spite of the obvious.
