Painted monasteries of Bucovina
Here are three of the four monasteries we visited. I'm sorry, but I forget which is which. They're all spectacular and are very highly recommended.
They represent the Bucovinan mentality at the turn of the 16th century. The "bad guys" are represented as Turks but of course, Jesus conquers all. Inside, you can see the family trees of the kings who comissioned the monasteries and also, calenders with saints. We had to find our birthdays on the ceiling.
We ended up hooking up with a local tour guide, Cipri, who was wonderful.
If you're in the region (or if you're not, do your best to go as the monasteries really are that spectacular), he's definitely the best tour guide there is. Well-versed in the local history, multilingual and humourous, he brings out all the interesting features of the region.
