Thanksgiving
I am such a good improvisational cook.
I made a complete ghetto Thanksgiving meal from scratch. It's amazing what you can create with a stove top, some pots, a few bowls and a fork.
I bought all my vegetables from the market to make it even more authentic.
I managed to find a lovely, delicious squash. It wasn't the acorn type that I was used to, but the flesh was bright orange and I figured it could substitute for the sweet potatoes I was desperately missing. I also got some carrots and potatoes and bought some chicken breasts at the corner store.
I've never made Thanksgiving dinner before. I've helped peel vegetables and the pumpkin pies were always my domain, but a complete dinner? Mom always took care of it.
I peeled, chopped and boiled my rare and beloved squash, as well as my more common and less beloved potatoes and carrots. I also fried up a handful of bread cubes. I mashed up my vegetables in bowls and added the bread to the potatoes to make ghetto stuffing. No summer savoury but better than nothing. I didn't even need the chicken (which I ended up slightly burning).
Which brings to note: my apartment doesn't have a fire alarm. Now I panic whenever I cook because I remember how many times I set off the alarm at my apartment last year.
Anyways, the meal was terrific. My squash was delicious! I don't even know if we have this type of squash back home. It actually looked a lot like a melon. It was the size of a very large watermelon and had the texture of a cantaloupe. I added some honey and coconur to make carrots a bt more exotic. I didn't use the powdered gravy (aka poutin sauce) I brought with me.
No pumpkin pie though. I saved some squash and I have some leftover philo pastry, so I'm hoping I can concoct a little something for dessert.
I'll post pictures tomorrow.

Your meal looks delicious, even though it isn't turkey. Are you aware that you can make squash pie, which is so similar to pumpkin pie that you can hardly tell the difference?
